Where you place your feet in yoga poses is important and it can change everything about a pose. Discover the value in paying attention to your feet in yoga.
There’s a specific placement for your feet in each yoga pose. And by varying that placement you can change the entire pose. All the sensations will be different.
Consider Mountain Pose or Tadasana in Sanskrit, you want your feet parallel. You want the big toes pointed straight ahead. Without awareness, often the feet go out to the side, pointing in opposite directions.
Consider a Warrior 1 or Virabhadrasana 1 in Sanskrit. Ideally your front foot in pointing straight ahead and there’s a slight rotation in your back foot allowing the hips to be facing forward. Changing the placement of your feet will change the placement of your hips.
In Warrior 2, bring awareness to your front foot. You want that front foot pointed straight ahead. Lift your arch allowing the knee to open. Without proper placement of the front foot you won’t feel the same hip opening sensations intended for this posture.
The feet are the foundation of our standing postures therefore the placement of your feet can make all the difference in a pose. This is even true if you're practicing yoga from a chair.
Once you have awareness of your feet on your mat, begin to pay attention to the placement of your feet when you walk. Notice the placement of your feet when you're driving or even when you're sitting.
Bring awareness to your feet, to the foundation of your body, and notice how that changes everything else throughout the rest of your body.
