Holding space is a concept that you can offer to support others even when it seems like there's nothing you can do.
So what can you do when there's destruction and devastation? As we know, life can present us with unforeseen challenges, especially natural disasters. You might have heard me mention this before – I'm Krista Oakes, and on this Mindful Monday, I want to share something close to my heart: the concept of holding space.
This week’s reflection comes from a personal experience. When the hurricane hit this time, I was out of town. Although I was grateful to be safe and away from the immediate threat, I felt a deep longing to support my community. It was in this moment that I discovered the power of holding space. Picture this: visualizing my community, my home, my friends, and family lifted up in a protective bubble, shielded from the storm's chaos.
Holding space became a way for me to actively contribute, even from afar. While I was physically distant, my thoughts and energy were wholly present, enveloping those I cared about with positive intentions and protection. This practice brought me peace and a sense of connection despite the miles.
For those of you who are not directly affected by the storm, I encourage you to try this practice. Close your eyes and envision the impacted communities. Imagine them receiving the help they need, the cleanup efforts progressing smoothly, and safety returning to those still without power and those striving to get back to their homes. Your thoughts can send waves of compassion and support where it’s needed most.
This mindful act of holding space is a unique way to extend your love and care. It’s a gentle yet powerful method to help your community through visualization and positive intent. Whether you are engaging in gentle yoga, chair yoga, or yoga for seniors, incorporating mindfulness into your practice can amplify this sense of connection and purpose.
Sending love, healing, and holding space for all those impacted.
Namaste.
Remember, our small acts of mindfulness and compassion can make a significant difference. Let’s continue to support and uplift one another.
