I want to share with you a wonderfully invigorating practice we do in gentle yoga and chair yoga that most of my students absolutely love—the Sufi circles. They refer to this practice as one of their favorites. I think it’s probably one of the movements that my students even do regularly on their own because they love it that much.

This gentle, rhythmic movement is not only enjoyable but offers an incredible way to stir up the energy in your body, leaving you feeling uplifted and revitalized.

Sufi circles have their roots in the mesmerizing movements of the whirling dervishes. These spiritual circles create a dynamic flow of energy, almost like a mini vortex, that softens the tension in your body, particularly in the back and hips. The best part is that you don’t actually have to spin to get these benefits.

You can easily incorporate Sufi circles into your gentle yoga or chair yoga practice, bringing numerous benefits with this movement that feels like a gentle massage for your spine and hips. Simply sit comfortably in a chair or on the floor, and imagine drawing large circles with your torso. You get to decide the size and pace of the motion. Small and slow, or big and energetic—it's entirely up to you! The warmth and energy stirred by these circles work wonders, especially if you're experiencing back pain and even sciatica pain.
