Holding Your Seat: Embracing Commitment with Compassion & Strength

What does it mean to hold your seat? In meditation, this concept is about sitting still to honor the commitment you’ve made to meditate. It’s not about forcing yourself to sit perfectly still, but rather staying with the practice, even when it feels uncomfortable. We’ve all experienced moments in meditation where our minds feel too busy, where physical discomfort starts to take over, or when boredom sets in. Holding your seat means sticking with it, no matter what.

This idea extends beyond meditation—it applies to any commitment you’ve made. Think about the goals you’ve set, whether it's practicing chair yoga regularly, journaling every day, or prioritizing self-care. It’s easy to get discouraged when challenges arise. There will be days when your mind is overwhelmed, your body feels tired, or the distractions of life make it hard to stay focused. Holding your seat means honoring the commitment you made, even when it’s difficult. It’s about deciding to push through those tough moments and trusting that staying present will bring you closer to your goal.

The power of holding your seat is in learning to sit with discomfort. It’s not about avoiding the struggle—it’s about leaning into it and seeing it through. This is a practice we can carry with us in every aspect of our lives. Whether it’s a project at work, a personal growth journey, or a health goal, the challenges we face are part of the process. Holding your seat means finding the strength to stay grounded and moving forward, even when it’s hard.

Think deeply about it: In what areas of your life have you been challenged to hold your seat? What commitments have you stuck with, despite difficulties, and how did you make it through? And just remember, your experiences make you who you are.

Remember, the practice of holding your seat is a reminder to stay committed to yourself and your goals. Even on the tough days, your commitment is what will carry you through.

Namaste.
